That celebrity love island is flopping apparently. Yawn - the whole 3rd class celeb thing is just so tiresome. In this day and age when everyone is a media star - including a primeminister who said he'd listen to the people - yet has put contraversial people in his new cabinet along with majorly contraversial plans.

They've also apparently arrested someone for the happy slapper incident in Blackey, where they're also on the verge of closing cash machines due to muggings.
What will solve that? more police? more cctv? Bring back smacking and corporal punishment?

I'm sure the stocks were very effective at preventing reoffending and stopping people offending to start with.

PLUS somene I know has an aunty who'll have to pay for attending a day care centre - £54 a day because she's saved up!

So what incentive is there to save for your old age if you won't end up leaving any cash or propertty to your relatives when you die? You may as well spend it all and have fun - that's assuming when you retire there'll be enough people working for there to be any pension or care for the elderly for free....
Will poor houses come back for people who don't save?

Don't know but the government is going to have to sort it out and makign us save will be one way. However its also likely our NI contributions will have to rise (Cos thats not a real tax rise) so as well as saving for our old age, we're paying for other people's, saving for our kids education, and trying to live!

cheeky credit card

My statement last month didn't arrive. You might think I was neglectful for not noticing - but I file all my paperwork and deal with it as it arrives and send stuff through to my accountant.

So I was very surprised this morning to open my credit card bill and find I'd not paid last months!
They've charged me £20 and interest for the privalege - but when i explained to the nice indian lady that I hadn't recieved the bill else I'd have paid it she refunded me £10. Half of the charge. Then she went on to say the interest was not because I'd not paid but because my six month interest free period was up.

Confused? I was.
I'm also going to change credit card company to one which I can have a direct debit payment on so this can't happen again - and I'm going to have to claim from Royal Mail my charges incurred.
Which will be fun.

Went to Primark in Manchester yesterday. Support China's economy I assume. Lovely tshirts though and got some socks for my son as we had a minor sock crisis yesterday.

Should buy some new swimming costumes and shorts for us all too. If we're planning on spending every day on the beach we'll need some spare pairs. Yes its nice to think about summer when the weather is lashing against the window.

The school walk seems to be the best way to get more steps in... so what can I do at the weekend... I guess a long walk round some car boots is the answer.

Well the election is over. Lib dems have snatched a few more seats in the North West. The % votes are shamefull though when you think how few seats opposition parties get for them.

And everyone is saying the economy is doing really well. Which is why Labour have got in again. I'm not convinced the UK economy is in a good state at all. I hope we don't slide into a recession as that'll be nasty for everyone.
Even a slight dip in consumer spending could be a problem.

So far this new diet thing isn't too bad at all. Had a bacon lettuce pickle sandwich with mustard mayonaise yesterday for my tea. Yummy. Its one of my favourite foods.

We're thinking about a picnic tomorrow but it looks like it might be a bit rainy so not sure where we'll go.
Am going to have to stretch my legs today at some point. Need to take my broken juicer back (tiny button on the bottom broke)
However I've put some washing on and need to change the beds and clean up a bit.

They have a very interesting forum where they chat about house prices and house programs - and as I'm a great fan of Sarah Beeny I like to know if the houses they have on that are sold.
There are people from all over the country who post on there so there is aways someone who can track down the address of the property that's just been on.

However its had so much traffic recently that their hosting is suffering. I guess lots of people are becoming more aware that this fantastic economy labour have been working on is nothing more than classic boom and bust and we're at the top of the housing bubble.

Housings even made it on to the BBC battle bus in North Devon. They've been in Beaford today (And watched sheep racing in Bideford) and house prices got mentioned. The only answer any of the Torys, Libs or Greens had was to buy land off landowners and building shared ownership propertys with housing associations. I don't see how this keeps the prices down though unless restrictions are placed upon how much they can be sold for. So rather than being a step on the ladder - normally you'd buy a FTB (first time buyer home) then sell it for a small profit and then get your next home - you're stuck as you've used up your one allowance for shared ownership on something which is still so small you can't ever have a family there. Then if prices drop (They surely must!) then you'll be stuck owing loads on half of not very much AND paying rent on the half you don't own too.
I personally see shared ownership as a complete cop-out to the solution.
Although possible solutions might have to include taxing HEAVILY the profits from second home ownership, thus making BTL (buy to let) unpopular again.
There are almost certainly more than enough properties to go round in the UK if we were only happy with one each.
Yes I would love a "holiday" home in Cornwall but I'd want to live there if I could afford to buy something near the coast.

Hundreds of thousands of people seem to have hit the property developers market in the last couple of years. Magnolia and laminate flooring shouldn't mean you can make huge profits on a house. But sadly the UK has binged itself greedily on quick profits. Does no one work for a living anymore?

Some people reckon that all the local authority jobs, new deal, SRB (Single regeneration budget) are responsible for most employment in the UK now.
We've precious little manufacturing left in this country, with the recent demise of 6000 plus jobs at Rover in the midlands, which eclipses the daily dirge of job culls which seems to be going on.

Sadly to pay for public sector jobs we have to pay enough tax. This is where it gets tricky. Without enough people outside the public sector working to oay taxes for those in it the system is doomed.

The exact economics of it I'm a bit wooly on, but basically its a "bad thing".
We're an ever aging population too. Us Brits just aren't keeping up the birth rates like we should, so we do seem to need to bring in younger people from somewhere, and these younger people need to have jobs. Where these jobs come from I'm not sure.

Ok, I do have some thoughts on job creation, but you'll think I'm a bit mad. Ever heard of Peak Oil? It is a point after which oil gets increasingly expensive to extract and there's less of it as there isn't any more to find. Use your favourite search engine to search for articles and news about Peak Oil.

Anyway,we're all far too dependent on oil. The UK should work on making itself self-sufficient in terms of food production, and energy.

I believe that every home in the UK should have its own solar and wind powered system. This could easily be funded by the government spending money it would other wise have to spend on building nuclear reactors (I can't see any of the current energy companies wanting to spend their *coughs* hard earned HUGE profits on actually making Britain self-sufficient in energy) to fund this program.
Money should also be spent researching new technologies to use solar, wind, water and other renewable energies.
Research could also be done on high quality "superfoods" like quinoa, algaes and other food sources which can be used to provide all the nutrients humans need, and we should grow more of these foods in the Uk.

We should get this started now.
We should forget about ID cards and work on Renweable energy.
We should stop worrying about terrorism and worry about being able to feed ourselves.

Who is he fighting?

It is the LABOUR government who put their foot down on the tram extension cos of the high costs and cynically in time for the election it is "back on" and they claim to be fighting for it still.

It is either on or not. It is going to be a very expensive thing to do - why no one has costed minor changes to the existing rail system (more stops) I don't know! A fast frequent service by train or tram would improve things, and an additional stop within 5 mins walk of my house would be FANTASTIC!

I think the tram has been used very cynically over the last year by the labour government and I think they deserve a quick kick up the election for it!

We had takeaway last night. I had americana pizza and managed three slices before my body told me it was full! Unusual to eat takeaway and not feel very very stuffed after though! So far I think this "diet" is going well. It certainly isn't stressful.
I bought some peanut butter and real butter. Things I wouldn't eat whilst dieting. I'm planning a nice bit of peanut butter on toast. Only one slice though - I've discovered I only need one slice of bread for a lunchtime sandwich - after all these years of stuffing myself with 2 or 3 slices.
Not sure what to do about Sunday tea. We normally go to my other half's mum and have a proper cooked tea, but I'd feel terrible sat there with either a small portion or having to leave loads. I might decide that by Sunday I'm ok about it though. Mind you it'll mean no pudding and she either does a trifle or apple pie and custard. I've not eaten pudding since I started this eating change. I did have an apple last night as I was getting a bit hungry. Didn't eat it all. Again something I'd never have done before.

We watched that Supersize me program last night. Thought it was quite gross showing what all that mcds did to him, but it isn't a surprise. If you restrict your diet to only fatty food then you'll get ill. In the same way as if you only ate carrots you'd get ill too - people go orange if they eat too much carrots or orange juice.
Too much of any one food group is bad for you.
The bloke's girlfriend cooked him his last supper with some quinoa (kin wa) as a vegetable salad sort of thing and it looked good. Its got loads of omega 3,6, and 9 in I think!

walking the weight off

I am trying out the walk-o-meter I got. From about lunchtime til bed yesterday I did about 8000 steps. That'll be why I'm so tired this morning.

They reckon you should aim to do about 10000 every day - and increase it by 2000 a week until you reach a level which you feel comfortable with and helps you lose weight.

I'm trying the Paul Mckenna book at the moment, which says to make sure you enjoy every mouthful of food and to only eat until you're full - not stuffed.
So yesterday I had spagetti on toast for lunch - with butter on the toast, something I've not eaten for years. It tasted great but listening to my body meant I was full after 1 slice and about half the spagetti.
I was starving by about half 4 though - so we had steak, chips and fried onions and again I ate a lot less than I would have done normally. Its odd listening to exactly when your body gives you the first signal you're full.
Supper I had to have a weetabix with hot milk cos I was hungry (Eat when you're hungry!)

This morning I had shreddies nuked and probably should have left a tiny bit but I didn't feel stuffed so we'll have to see what time I feel peckish.
The book says to check its not thirst by having a glass of water when you first feel hungry. Apparently this is a signal we misinterpret a lot.
It also says not to weigh yourself for two weeks. So I know I was about 10 stone (eek after masses of delicious Christmas cake. and easter eggs...)

I'm reading The Bad Mothers Handbook by Kate Long. It is a touching tale of three generations of women in one family living a year of their life and their individual struggles to get through each day.

It is quite funny to read through and I've had to pick a few bits out and read them aloud to let my other half know why I'm laughing.

Part of the story deals with the girl losing her virginity and subsequently being dumped by the pig of a bloke. Its written in such a way that I think most people will be able to relate to it. The desperation of just getting through mild traumas which add up to life.
It also deals with an elderly mother who is in need of more care than her daughter can give. This is a senario many of us will have touched our lives also. If you've got elderly grandparents then family members caring for them is something you'll be able to relate to. The stresses of this are heartbreaking to read, but the family get through all their troubles and manage as best they can.

A great book for girls of all ages.

How I hate spam

Every morning the first thing I do at work (ok, the second thing I do at work after reading the bbc news site for 5 mins) is check my email. Then I wait whilst all the spam downloads and gets filtered. Spam has definately got worse over the last few months. Its like the world and his dog want to spam me out of existance.
The number with attachments seems to grow too - which means you need a good antivirus package to stop youraself getting infected with nasty viruses and spyware. My dad recently managed to get some spyware on his pc and it was doing some odd things including changing his home page. My brother in law had to sort it out for him but my dad said the pc was almost unusable for a couple of days whilst he was waiting for him to turn up.

Because they're really cheap (And that site shows some great money saving options too) and his mates are fed up with not being able to get through on the phone! (Ah I can remember a few years back when I'd get letters from them saying "we've been trying to ring you for weeks now get off the internet and let us ring you)
I spose the main advantage is that you can get phone calls whilst you're online, then you don't get the two hour cut off anymore. How I used to hate that when chatting to people on ICQ - having to remember that I'd have to redial after two hours. It meant planning anything like downloads was a nightmare too.
But anyway I'm going off track... I started ranting about spam. I should change my email address but I've got so many people who use this one it'd take me months to get round to making sure everyone had the new one.
Anyway I've found a solution which means I don't have to change my email address, and it'll kill the spam wihtout me seeing it AND most importantly for people who are on limited bandwidth usage it deletes it before you get to download it which saves you loads of bandwidth and time.

Not convinced I've not completely broken this already. Will try posting this and see if I have two posts or three now. Serves me right for watching tv whilst doing this. The Fugitive is on. A Harrison Ford film where he's trying to prove he didn't kill his wife.
I've seen it before I think. Although the train crash came as a shock. I noticed we didn't not show the film out of sympathy to the 50+ people who've died in Japan today in a train crash.

I've got a noisy keyboard. Its got a nice sound but it also means when we're watching tv and I'm typing fast that I drown out the noise of the film.
It does have a good action to it though and the letters haven't worn off yet. I've destroyed a couple of keyboards in the last year or so by wearing the letters off.

It brings home the reality of what it means to have such a nuclear accident. For us in the UK it meant some tv news and not eating welsh lamb for a while. For a huge number of people it meant death or disease and permanent changes in their life.
Could you imagine having to leave your home at a moments notice and never to return?

It is such a horrific idea. What would you take? Would you snatch up whatever was to hand or do you have a list of things you'd have to take?
